Derry is the Gateway to the Northwest, so it's the ideal centre for touring three stunning areas - the majestic Atlantic coastline that sweeps eastwards from the Foyle Estuary to the Giant's Causeway and a must for all visitors is a trip on one of the World's Great Railway Journeys (see image above) as detailed by Michael Palin in his rail journey from Derry to Kerry, the Sperrins with its world class Ulster-American Folk Park, and the splendours of Donegal's Inishowen Peninsula.

The Sperrins and Causeway Coast & Glens are well-known to visitors.

The Inishowen Peninsula

Inishowen has been relatively unexplored by overseas tourists until recently - it really is one of Ireland's most delightful secrets, so you have a treat in store!

Here are a few suggestions for things to see and do on a day trip across to Donegal from Derry: How about a bracing stroll on the sand of the surf-washed Blue Flag Beach at Culdaff; a walk up to the awesome Gap of Mamore; a visit to an O'Doherty stronghold (take your pick!); or a sea-angling expedition aboard a top-class boat from Bunagee Pier? A visit to Ireland's most northerly point Malin Head

Don't miss the well-signposted and very welcoming Doagh Island Visitor Centre which tells the story of Famine, Fear and Eviction in a superb setting. Its cottages preserve the customs, traditions and history of the people of Inishowen. Scenes include a Mass Rock, Presbyterian Meeting House and Orange Hall.

Then how about an afternoon of seaside fun in Buncrana; a day's pony-trekking around Muff; a leisurely seafood lunch in Greencastle/Moville, a guided tour of Fort Dunree, Ireland's only military museum? or watch a performance of spectacular culture at the Cairn Visitor Centre near Greencastle.

There are two other Inishowen experiences that should not be missed: The first is a drive along the stunningly scenic necklace of roads known as the Inishowen 100 . This is surely one of the most rewarding drives in the world, with spectacular vistas at every turn along its twisting hundred miles.

It will take you through a countryside of contrasts -- from lunar landscapes where the only living being for miles is the blackfaced ram that defiantly bars your way, to modern seaside resorts packed with happy holidaymakers.

The other must-see is the Grianan Ailigh at Burt, Co Donegal just 3 miles from Derry, the ancient stone ring fort ( dating to 1700 BC) which was royal residence of The O'Neills. Then it's back to Derry for a night on the town!
